What is a "Chaitya?"
"Chaitya" (pronounced 'chite-yuh') is a Sanskrit word referring to a
sacred or auspicious place.
For example, the central cave pictured above is a specific cave type
known as a "chaitya hall." This photograph was taken at Bhaje (Bhaja),
an early Buddhist cave site in Maharashtra State, India.
