About the Archive The Chaitya Archive is comprised of photographs taken by David Efurd. For 2003-2004, David received a Fulbright-Hays award to undertake an extensive study of rock-cut cave architecture. During his tenure and in subsequent trips, he visited seventy rock-cut sites and amassed over ten thousand photographs. Although Pune in Maharashtra state is his 'home base,' David has visited rock-cut sites in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Orissa. At all of the visited sites, he undertook a thorough photo- documentation of both interior and exterior rock-cut features, including architectural details, inscriptions, and sculptures. GPS readings provided mapping coordinates for their locations. |

The creation of the archive is an attempt to encourage integrated studies of rock-cut architecture on the Indian subcontinent and throughout Asia. Central to the mission of the Chaitya Archive is the dissemination of information about little-known and understudied rock-cut sites. |
